About this deal

The Orient 3 star reviewed here is really quite impressive when you open the box. Others have noted that it looks a lot better in person than it does in pictures, and they are absolutely right! The dial has longitudinal facets that don't show up in pictures, but really catch the light, especially outside. The watch is sized as described, and it is considerably smaller and lighter than a divers watch, so it's very easy to wear when you are working with your hands (where a large watch would be snagging on everything). The day/date really jumps out and is very easy to read even at my age (bearing down on 60). I have not had it long enough to evaluate accuracy, but so far it seems perfect. My other Orient gains maybe a minute a week, so I would expect similar accuracy here. This is my second Orient automatic. I have an Orient diver's model, and I wanted to get something smaller and lighter for everyday use. I really wanted an Orient, as the two other well-known brands of automatics that I have tried have been unsatisfactory in terms of accuracy and/or durability. My Orient divers watch, on the other hand, has proven to be very accurate, and still looks and feels great after years of daily use.

When pressed in, the crown does nothing. When pulled to first position, you can adjust the date. When pulled to second position, you can adjust the time. Protecting the dial is a flat mineral crystal that sits ever so slightly above the polished metal bezel. At this price point, you might expect to get a scratch prone plastic acrylic crystal but Orient wanted the Orient 3 Star to be more durable and longer lasting so they chose the stronger mineral crystal. Since the 1970s, the brand has continued to produce Orient Tristar watches, and this is evident in the number of models currently available. It features a very lightly brushed vertical pattern that gives this already unique dial an added touch of character. I really enjoy the fun dial Orient chose for this 3 Star model, it’s a nice splash of color that is in no way too loud for everyday wear or even for some dresser occasions. As with most information about Orient’s history, finding details about when the 3 Star line was introduced is difficult. The general consensus is that sometime in the 1970’s Orient wanted to produce a reliable watch that did not require battery changes but also did not need regular service like most automatic watches of the day.

Orient claims that this 21 jewels movement achieves 21,600 oscillations per hour (or 6 beats per second). That gives their watches great longevity, meaning that you’ll be able to keep this watch around for a long time. Final Verdict: Worth It First, the metal bracelet, while nice and light, feels a bit sharp around the edges. An oyster bracelet this is definitely not. Their new watches would be as affordable as the new quartz watches that were conquering the market and would not have the additional cost of having to change the battery periodically. For a watch that’s still assembled in-house, it’s overall an impressive piece. Now let’s get into the details. The Case The crystal is mineral and slightly protrudes from the small polished steel bezel. It’s not the best crystal, but it performs its function well.

What this means is that there isn't any way to set super-precise time on the Three Star. At any time you will be anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds off, which on this watch is not a big deal. Readability

It doesn’t take much force to open it which can be annoying and hazardous to the watch if it unexpectedly opens. The outer surface has a brushed finish that runs the length of the clasp along with the lion logo and “ORIENT” stamped on it. The fold-over arms are lightly polished. In Russia, Vostok has also consistently produced affordable mechanical watches. For different reasons, Russian watchmakers have put affordability and reliability at the centre of their collections. In the case of the Vostok, producing unsophisticated, bomb-proof divers watches (more here and here). Supposedly, the proper name for this timepiece is the Orient Three Star, sometimes written as Orient 3 Star. It appears the Orient 3 Star has a respectable history with providing developing countries an affordable timepiece that they could depend on, but does that make the watch worth buying? I have had the green dial reference FAB00009N for several weeks and have experienced both the positives and negatives of wearing a low cost watch in everyday situations. I’ve covered the Seiko 5 models before, which offer similarly good value for a low cost, so I was after something a bit different; that you may not have considered before. Something a little smaller that could be worn in a range of environments.

Where can I buy Orient TriStar watches?

Their supposed target markets were less developed areas of the world that had no access to fresh watch batteries so a low cost yet dependable automatic watch would be popular. After being released, the rest of the world slowly began to appreciate the Orient 3 Star’s affordable quality and buyers from all around wanted one. I think the best reason to buy an Orient Three Star is just for the fact it's a "workhorse automatic." It looks nice enough, it fairly light for what it is (mine after removing links to fit my wrist is just 81g,) it seems to be accurate from my experience with it thus far, and yeah, good watch. I'm happy to own it. As one might imagine, the gold theme is also carried over to the FAB00009N’s handset. Orient went with basic baton style hour and minute hands and a thin second hand, all colored gold. The handset works wonderfully with the dial and is very easily read against the green color. Automatic watches can be a bit annoying if you switch them frecuently, if you wear the watch a lot it is not much an incovenience. Unless you're very sedentary, is unlikely that the watch would stop over nightime if you wear it at least 7-8 hours during the day. Accuracy of automatics is far worse than with a normal quality quartz, but just readjusting time each 1-2 weeks is ok. Orient did us all a favor by making the FAB00009N’s lug width 19mm to fit a wide variety of aftermarket straps. Although 20mm lugs would’ve been even better, most 20mm nylon and other soft straps will compress to 19mm without much effort or unsightliness. I was able to put a 20mm perlon strap on it without any fuss or difficulty.

As you'll see from the links above, a whole bunch of people call it the Tri Star, so... whatever, I guess. Three Star, Tri Star... doesn't really matter. Several firsts The case of the Orient Tristar is made of stainless steel and has quite compact dimensions, measuring only 37 mm in diameter in most models, although there are also 40mm and even 43mm options. One change I’d like to see here is fully drilled lug holes to make strap changes a little easier. Although not too difficult as it is, drilled lugs would reduce the chances of scratching the lugs with the forked end of the spring bar tool. Unless what's stated on the dial is blatantly lying to me (which I doubt,) I do believe the automatic movement is truly Japanese. I don't know if this means the movement was made in Japan or designed in Japan and constructed elsewhere like Thailand or Indonesia. Not a clue. All I know is that the dial states it's a Japan movement. Today, it is still possible to find the classic 37mm design in a wide variety of colors, but there are also new models with dials up to 43mm and many other designs.

First, the specs: This case measures in at 37 mm in diameter, and stands 11 mm high. That gives it a sort of boxy shape, but not overly so. Lots of contradicting information from listing to listing about the Three Star. However, I measured the thing myself, so now I have the accurate figures. Below the lion logo is “ORIENT” and below the center of the dial is the 3 star logo, all of which are applied and not simply printed. These applied logos were an unexpected surprise when I first looked at the watch in person.
