We've been testing the best portable speakers for years, in all sizes and shapes – and, crucially, for all budgets. People aren't typically looking for audiophile sound quality here, but they do want something portable that delivers balanced and full audio outdoors (because if you're going to buy something, it might as well sound good, right?) and with a battery that lasts and lasts. These are our priorities when we're testing these speakers, and obviously we're balancing that with the price – otherwise known as value for money. The priority with the Prodigy 5, much like their five-star Prodigy 1 standmount siblings, has been to eke out as much sound-per-pound punch as possible, letting considerations over design and aesthetic flourishes fall away in the pursuit of the best audio you can get for the price. Enter the Era 300, Sonos’ more expensive rival to the HomePod 2 that looks to beat Apple at its own game. With its unique, “cinched hourglass” shape, there’s no question that the Era 300 is a bit more of an acquired taste than most of the brand’s rather more conservative designs, but what isn't up for debate is how superbly the five-star Era 300 manages to perform. In short, it is absolutely excellent. Tonally, they don’t have the luscious midrange warmth of the comparable Dali Spektor 2, which should be considered alternative options alongside the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1, but they’re admirably balanced and capable of making the best of any recording – even those of poor quality.

PMC has something of a reputation for high-end hi-fi, and while the superb Prodigy 5 have wound up as our best premium floorstanders on this list, they're actually miraculously good value. While the more expensive Wharfedale Evo 4.4 provide a sophisticated alternative, Q Acoustics 5040 are even-handed performers that simply step out of the way of the music and let songs shine. When partnered with care they deliver a wonderfully expressive and insightful performance that’s class-leading at this level. Most Windows users have more than just one audio output device connected to their computers – the most common example of this being the average Windows user having a pair of headphones for when they want to keep the sound to themselves and a speaker or set of speakers for when they feel like sharing the music. Another common example of this is users having different speaker setups such as one normal setup and one surround sound setup both connected to their Windows computer. You want audiophile sound: The Roam's audio performance isn't bad by any means, but the bass frequencies can be overwhelming.

If you're worried whether one speaker will be enough for the garden party, it will here – and for this money, it represents unbeatable sound-per-pound value. The Ultimate Ears Hyperboom is a powerful speaker that will deliver a party atmosphere, both indoors and outdoors. Its Ultimate Ears' largest Bluetooth speaker to date, but stays in keeping with the company's stylish designs, and adds two Bluetooth radios so you can switch seamlessly between two phones. There’s no Wi-Fi connectivity though which seems a shame at this price as it limits multi-room capabilities and range. There’s no AirPlay or Google Cast options either, or the possibility of streaming higher quality audio files from servers. It’s probably not going to be a deal breaker if you’re sold on the design but given the asking price and competition it should be there.

You want Wi-Fi connectivity: Unlike the Sonos Roam, there’s no option to hook the Flip 6 up to your home network for higher quality music streaming. Ultimate Ears is a company that creates portable speakers that can sync up through their BOOM & MEGABOOM app. The downside is that you can only use their speakers. But on the plus side, you can connect as many as you’d like and create quite an impressive audio experience.
