Description

All the displays can be tilted, rotated, and angled, but it's less versatile than most stands. Because all the monitors are so close together, there are some limits on what you can do (for example, you can't rotate the top display into portrait if the bottom two are landscape). The bottom arms each have one point of articulation to help free things up, but the top arm only allows for minimal height adjustment (the range will be affected by the size of each display). Monitor size is one exception: While the standard LX is rated for monitors up to 34 inches, the Side-by-Side’s arm is only rated for monitors up to 27 inches. The monitor arms aren’t long enough to fit two 32-inch or 34-inch monitors side-by-side. Vertical arrangements are also supported, though only if one of the two monitors is small (less than 23 inches diagonal). If you have three displays and are ready to upgrade to a triple-monitor stand or arm, there are a few important things to keep in mind. Monitor stands come in a few different form factors, which handle monitors differently and require varying amounts of installation. It’s important to know what you’re getting into before you start adjusting your workspace. Why it made the cut: The Monoprice Essential Triple-Monitor Arm Desk cuts down on adjustability to give you the cheapest reliable option for three displays. Popular Science started writing about technology more than 150 years ago. There was no such thing as “gadget writing” when we published our first issue in 1872, but if there was, our mission to demystify the world of innovation for everyday readers means we would have been all over it. Here in the present, PopSci is fully committed to helping readers navigate the increasingly intimidating array of devices on the market right now.

One of the biggest draws of monitor arm stands is that they are highly adjustable, much more so than the standard freestanding mounts that most monitors come with. Monitor arms can adjust up and down easily, which many monitor stands cannot. Monitor arms can also adjust toward and away from you. We’re not a fan of the arm’s installation. It has two clamps instead of one unified clamp, which is strange, because the base of the monitor arm is one solid piece. There are roughly a dozen screws to install. And the included cable routing can prove hard to tighten once several cables are held within the routing. HUANUO hasn’t just gone above and beyond to match some of the specs and features you’d associate with more expensive products, their thoughtfulness is punctuated by handy little details such as underside padding on the base plate and detachable clips for cable management. First, let’s talk weight. The Ergotron HX is rated to hold monitors that weigh up to 42 pounds and screen sizes up to 49 inches. That’s an extraordinarily high weight limit—I haven’t reviewed a single monitor in 2023 that exceeds it. I attached both a 32-inch widescreen and 38-inch ultrawide monitor, which weighed roughly 15 and 20 pounds, respectively, and the HX easily handled both.

Things To Consider

The other factor to keep a close eye on is the weight limit of the monitor mount. While most of the mounts on our list have comparable maximum weights, it’s important to make sure your monitor won’t put too much strain on the arm before purchasing it. Monoprice lists the monitor as capable of supporting 20 pounds, but I felt the 32-inch monitor (which weighed 15 pounds) was pushing the Workstream to its limits. Monoprice also skimps on the warranty, offering just one year of coverage.

Featuring innovations like Humanscale’s patented Weight-Compensating Spring Technology and Smart Stop functionality, M10 enables the personalisation and flexibility needed for today’s evolving workplaces.Support for multiple monitor sizes: Because 27-inch monitors have become so common— they don’t cost much more than smaller displays—we considered only monitor arms that could handle a screen at least that size. All the models we tested can work with smaller displays, and a few can even hold larger displays, up to 34 inches. Grommet mounts insert into the circular cut-outs found on many desks built and sold for corporate offices. A grommet mount is also a form of clamp, but size of the mechanism is different, and the mount attaches the monitor to the interior of the desk instead of an exterior edge. They can even help improve the ergonomics and usability of your workspace. If you’ve ever wanted to free yourself from the chains of freestanding monitors, then keep reading. We’ll help you find the best monitor arm for your needs.

If you’re looking for the most adjustable monitor mount then we recommend the Ergotron LX. This monitor arm boasts a very easy adjustment with its Constant Force technology that is smooth and stays in place when not being adjusted. Measuring only 12” across and 14” deep, this EZM stand has one of the smallest footprints you’ll find in a tri-monitor design, freeing up huge amounts of valuable desk space for the things you always wanted to work into your setup but never could. These stands are fitted to the edge of your desk using C-clamps. They have a small footprint and are very secure, but they don’t suit particularly deep desks as your monitors will be too far away. Arm Type In today’s fast-paced, agile work environment, there’s no time for discomfort. M10, part of Humanscale’s revolutionary new monitor arm line, instantly improves the comfort, health and productivity of any workspace. Built to hold heavier equipment, it's optional strong triple crossbar allows M10 to hold up to three monitors or 21.8 kg (48 lbs.) – all while maintaining a simple and sleek design. It’s also an incredibly strong and durable design capable of holding 22 lbs per mount. Not having to shop around for excessively light products is going to really open up the monitor market for you. Monitor size limits should be respected as well. It might be possible to attach a 40-inch monitor to an arm meant for a 32-inch monitor. The 40-inch monitor may even come within the arm’s weight limit. A larger monitor will distribute weight differently, however, which could cause an arm’s tension mechanism to fail. How we test monitor arms Creators required to run multiple programs at once, writers that need multiple sources visible at all times, and gamers that need a larger field of vision all rely on multiple-screen computer systems, but these expansive setups aren’t without their issues.

Monitor arms are a great way to reduce the amount of desk space that your computer setup occupies. They also make your monitor look amazing, giving it a floating aesthetic that looks incredible if you’re creating a more minimal, clean-looking setup. Two monitors are always better than one, and the same goes for monitor arms. It’s no surprise, then, that Ergotron’s LX Side-by-Side ranks as our best dual monitor arm. The Ergotron LX Side-by-Side pairs two LX monitor arms together on one mount. The look, feel, and specifications of each arm are close to its standalone sibling.

The Huanuo HNDS12, like the HNDS6 (below), is a bit fiddly to set up. It has two clamps that need to be adjusted and roughly a dozen screws that need to be installed. The gas springs also require a bit of adjustment to reduce the force provide, at least when used with a 24-inch or 27-inch monitor. There are a variety of things that could lead people to use a monitor arm. For some, the ergonomics (and convenience) of being able to move your monitor exactly where you want, well, it’s something that can be hard to give up. For others, the desk space being saved by taking the monitor off the desk is invaluable. The Huanuo HNDS12 represents a middle ground for shoppers who want an upgrade in quality but need to respect their budget. While it’s not as flexible as, say, our TechOrbit or Mount-It! choices, It still offers you 45° downward and 15° upward tilt functions, 16” of height adjustability, 360° swivel, and full individual VESA mount rotation. The Workstream by Monoprice single monitor arm is a no-frills solution that delivers basic monitor arm features at an exceptionally low price.
